Though the body took some work, the shooting stroke has always been pure. Potts credits Tyrone Bailey, a former player at an Alabama community college whom he met during a pickup game at the local Boys & Girls Club, for working with him since ninth grade.
“He didn’t miss a shot,” Potts said. “After he got done playing I was like, ‘Can you teach me how to shoot like that? We’d meet up every day around 3 (p.m.) and he’d teach me how to shoot, make sure my form was right, make sure my body was straight up and and down, keep my elbow in. I’ve been a great shooter ever since, but I’ve got a lot more in my bag. I can drive it, finish around the rim. There’s more to it than shooting.”

When it was all said and done, Potts not only showed up on the big stage, but he also took home some hardware: the tournament MVP trophy.
